Vacuum warranties – Buyers beware
Posted by Sheri Davis on May 8, 2012 in Tips, Vacuums | 0 comments
We’ve had a few comment postings on our Mr. Sweeps Vacuums & More blog, regarding purchasing vacuums and other products from Craig’s List, E-Bay and other unverified or second hand sources. While these MAY be a great source for deals , BUYERS BEWARE that when you purchase from avenues such as these some products, especially vacuums, may not have warranties that will be honored by manufacturers or their authorized dealers
If you think that you’re saving money by buying second hand, think about what you’ll do when the machine breaks and you have no recourse. If you’re being told otherwise, you may be the victim of misinformation.
I mention vacuums specifically because this is what I know. I’m sure it applies to other products, but for the purpose of this blog, I refer to vacuums. In the case of Oreck, Miele, Riccar and particularly DYSON, name, address and phone number of the purchaser is recorded on the date of sale. If you need to have the vacuum serviced under warranty, you will be asked for the original receipt. If you don’t have it, the warranty service center will call the manufacturer and ask if the information has been recorded. If they are not able to find it under your name, they will ask where the vacuum was purchased. If they can’t match serial number/seller information, they’ll most likely deny warranty coverage on the product. **ALWAYS keep your vacuum receipts. **
Having the paper work that comes with the vacuum does not really protect you. You need the original receipt, with your name and the registration. In the case of DYSON, in order to get repairs covered under warranty you MUST call them first and they will send you to the closest store and fax the store an approval for your service. It is clearly in the instructions that come with your
new vacuums. Otherwise you pay for repairs.
The majority of service centers (if ethical) will require this information for their protection. If they service your vacuum and replace parts under warranty, the manufacturer requires us to obtain this information, PRIOR to service in order for US (the service establishment) to be paid. We don’t have it; we do not get paid for our time and parts. Not a good way to stay in business.
One of the reasons why small business owners like Mr. Sweeps Vacuums & More, plus large manufacturers require proof of purchase is theft. If you’re buying a product, on-line from an unknown or less than reputable source, the chance that the product is stolen goods increases. Many service and repair service centers will post serial numbers of stolen goods for access by similar businesses, so that when one comes in for service, it can be confiscated and police contacted. If your product warranty has expired and you’re paying for the repair, this is not an issue.
So, is having a warranty worth the extra money? Absolutely!!! Regardless of what vacuum you have, at some point it could malfunction. You’ve spent your hard earned money on it. You can protect your investment by having that warranty, or you could just buy another vacuum which would cost you more than if you purchased one with a warranty to start with. The average bill to service a vacuum is about $100. Is it really worth taking this chance? And lastly, how do you know that this vacuum is not infested with fleas or has been used to vacuum germs and bacteria from someone else’s home? Not having a warranty is bad enough, but having someone else’s fleas is worse.
With all the deals Mr. Sweeps Vacuums & More offers and that of other small business across the country, you can find a new vacuum or a refurbished one that has a warranty for a great discounted price. Mr. Sweeps Vacuums always carries some refurbished vacuums that have been sanitized and completely re-worked starting at $99. We also have close-out vacuums monthly. What value would you put on piece of mind? Buyers beware, don’t be taken. Readers: What experiences have you had with not having a warranty on a vacuum you purchased?
